Abstract

The significance of the self-organizing method of construction for housing design is fundamentally in maintaining the value of housing by using self-sustaining adaptability. It is assumed that the application of complex science to environmental design methods for cities and buildings has a large potentiality for the temporal designing method that intends to maintain rationality of a structure by adapting to natural and social changes that occur over time. One of the problems that modern architectural design is that the rigid relationship between parts and a whole becomes a roadblock when one is adapting to social and human conditions that change during the process of planning. In this paper, the dynamic forming method of this relationship between parts and a whole is defined as self-organization. In the examples of this simulation for building a housing complex, adaptability required for systems were confirmed by observing changes of the external environmental conditions on the built systems and the change of the assumed usage condition and the effect of the simulation. This system is designed for constructing a apartment unit as a modular parts. Simulation of decision making for configuration by computer program is also conducted for this system. This system uses three dimensional cell-automaton calculation and treats a three-dimensional apartment unit as a building that generates changes of its configuration. This system can maintain a certain level of performance even when the initial configuration is changed in many ways. Thus, compared with regular designing methods, this system has a much greater ability of adopting for changing conditions. With this innovative methods of construction, materials used for building can be used repeatedly. Reusing building materials can save resources. Uniformed monotony can be avoided as it allows diversification at parts. Diversification is a characteristic that a complex system needs to maintain adaptability.
