A study on relationships between performance of professional sports clubs using network analysis

Abstract

In this research, the strategy goals for the Japanese professional sports clubs are set up on the basis of four perspectives in the balanced scorecard, and the performance measures for the given strategy goals are derived, and then a new approach that the relationships between performance measures and critical measures are visually and quantitatively grasped by using network analysis is presented. The balanced scorecard is usually constructed by conducting interviews to the managers and employees which manages evaluation of achievements and strategies from Four Perspectives (Financial, Customer, Internal Business, and Human Resources and Innovation). In that case, "Strategy Maps" for achieving company goals and "Performance Measures" which acts as evaluation measures are necessary. However, there are problems that the result tends to be easily affected by their creator's subjective views, and that the interviewer's high ability is required. Therefore, the questionnaire survey that targeted domestic professional sports clubs on Performance Measures was conducted, and the relationships between Performance Measures were analyzed. The method adopted is the technique of the network analysis. By drawing the network charts, visualization of the relationships between Performance Measures were derived, and by calculating the measures of centrality, critical measures were cleared up. As a result, "The number of spectators in the stadium and the number of event holding are central measures for sports clubs", "the number of spectators and the number of initiate members in fan club relate to the income and play decisive roles of mediation", and "It is necessary not only to increase attendance figures but also to make the stadium into no vacancy to improve ROI" have been revealed. It is thought that ease of answering the questionnaire could be kept because the relations were examined by asking whether their Performance Measures were improved or not, and that data was also able to be collected from the professional sports clubs that does not make financial information public. It has the novelty in the point of being able to collect more data by the above-mentioned analysis techniques and to discuss the relationships between Performance Measures based on objective data.
