Abstract

In this paper an Electro-Rheological Fluid (ERF) is applied to a clutch as a power transmission medium. The ERF is a kind of colloidal suspension whose rheological property varies according to the intensity of electric field applied to it. Two prototypes of ERF clutches, a cylinder model and a disk model, are manufactured. The basis characteristics of these ERF cluches, i. e. the relation between these transmitting torque and the electric field intensity, are measured. Based on these characteristics, a feedback control system are designed and it is well successed to control the transmitted torque.
