Adaptive modification of large display advertisement geometry and layout in accordance with passengers' positions

Abstract

A viewer would see the large display content with a distorted geometry, which differs according to his individual standing position. This problem makes it difficult for the viewer to understand the content correctly. In particular, when such a large display is used as digital signage advertisement, this problem has negative influences on its advertising effect. On the top of that, in most cases, passengers do not originally have interests in the digital signage content and thus it is not proper to ask them to move to appropriate positions, which was suggested as one of the solutions in previous attempts. We, therefore, propose a novel method which can deliver the content only with little distortion to each passenger without requiring voluntary moves. Specifically, the method automatically detects each passenger's position and adaptively modifies the large display content geometry and layout as if the content was rotated toward the viewers at the positions. We implemented a large display system with the proposed method and evaluated the accuracy of passengers' positions detection, carried out computer simulation to evaluate how distortion of the content in each viewer's sight is reduced, and measured an influence to its advertising effect through an evaluation experiment. The result supports the effectiveness of our system.
