Abstract
We have demonstrated that sol-gel-derived wurtzite-type Mg xZn 1-xO films can exhibit reproducible blue emissions after heat treatments in a reducing atmosphere. Furthermore, the emission colors could be finely tuned by changing the Mg content x and band-gap values. In contrast, the films showed orange emissions when they were heated in an oxidizing atmosphere. Our results then provided new insight into the mechanism of the visible emissions of ZnO.
