Abstract

A graded index (GI) polymer optical fiber amplifier (POFA) with gain in the visible region is reported. It is prepared by doping organic dyes into the core of a fiber. The preparation process and the amplification properties of the Rhodamine B-doped GI POFA are reported. High gain (27dB) for a GI POFA with a 0.5-m length, 0.25-mm core diameter, and 0.5-mm fiber diameter was observed.
