Laser angioplasty using a CO laser, 5 μm in wavelength, has been studied. However, CO laser light (mid-IR light) cannot transmit in liquid water. To achieve therapeutic irradiation in a water solution, a contact CO laser irradiation method has been developed. An experimental study of the therapeutic effects of CO laser irradiation in water is described. The results indicate that CO laser angioplasty may be possible even in water under a coronary angioscope.
