Clinical and pathologic features of antibodies to ro and la in sjogren syndrome

Abstract

Purpose: Antibodies to Ro and La are frequently detectable in sera from patients with Sjogren syndrome (SS). Henee we propose to determine a possible association between these antibodies and clinical/pathologic features in SS patients. Methods: Thirty females with primary SS and 5 females with secondary SS including 4 with rheumatoid arthritis and 1 with other connective tissue disease were recruited in this study. Serum antibodies to Ro and La were determined by en/yme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Tear and ocular surface examinations for evaluating lacrimal function and stimulated parotid How rate for assessment of salivary function were performed. Each case underwent labial salivary gland biopsy. Results: The group of patients with positive anti-Ro and/or -La (Ro/La+ve, n=28) had a significant younger age (53.8±8.4 years) than the group with negative anti-Ro and -La (Ro/La-ve. n-7. 62.7±7.4 years. P<.001). There are no significant difference between the two groups in Schirmer test, rose bengal and fluorescein scores, stimulated parotid flow rate, and histologie focus scores <P>.05). Serum levels of antibodies antibodies correlated well with age (r=.6. p<-01) and histologie focus scores {r-.7. p<.001). Cqnclusion: Our results show that the production ol" anti-La-vc antibodies was a feature related to younger aged patients. Anti1 a+le antibodies may play a role on lymphocyte infiltration of glandular tissues in SS patients.
