Abstract

This paper describes a system to predict positions and dimensions of burrs formed in end-milling. Two kinds of burr models are applied for the prediction, namely "Poisson burr model" which estimates the burr formed by the cutting edge entering a workpiece and "rollover burr model" which estimates the burr formed by the cutting edge leaving a workpiece. The prediction takes into account the geometric parameters of the cutting tool used, physical properties of the workpiece, cutting conditions, and cutting force. Some of these values are derived using the NC simulator. Predictions and examinations were performed in some cutting conditions, and the predictions of top burrs were found to agree with the results of experiments.
