Digital play therapy for children with learning disabilities

Abstract

Children who are suffering on learning and developmental disabilities require daily trainings for social skills. However, such daily training is not provided occasionally because it requires interactive helps from therapists. In this paper, we propose a digital dollhouse that enhanced traditional psychological play therapy with digital sensors and computer graphics. The digital dollhouse provides immersive space to children which grows children's communication skill through their imaging play. This device allows nonprofessional like parents to make play therapy. In this paper, we show details about prototype of digital dollhouse. We also categorize requirements for digital play therapy that are given by psychological viewpoints based on the prototype. Interdisciplinary design process collaborating with engineers and psychologists shows the possibility that digital dollhouse is enough to enhance empathy of children and such empathy will be enhanced by creating immersive characters.
