Abstract

An investigation was carried out to examine the effects of the treatment temperature of gas blow IH nitriding on the surface characteristics and fatigue properties of titanium alloy. It was found that the surface hardness of titanium alloy treated by gas blow IH nitriding at 1073 K increased, and the fatigue strength of the treated alloy was the same as that of the untreated one. These results indicate that gas blow IH nitriding creates a high hardness layer on the surface of the alloy that prevents the deterioration of fatigue strength.
