Effects on corneal epithelium after small incision cataract surgery

Abstract

Purpose. Even after s mall-incision cataract surgery, we experienced patients complaining of foreign body sensation ind dry sensation. We investigated its effect on the comeal epithelium. Methods. Twelve eyes with age-related cataract undergoing phacoemulsification combined with indaocular lens implantation were studied. Eight eyes had clear-corneal incision. We examined a form and funclion of corneal epithelium, and dynamic state of tear [> days, 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Results. Fluorescein staining, rose bengal staining, breakup time of tear film, cornea] sensitivity and corneal epithelial cell areas showed no statistically significant difference before and after si rgery. A statistically significanl difference was found before (10.8 ±8.7mm) and 3 da; s (7.4±7.Omm) after surgery (p<0.05)in ihe value of Schirmer1 s test (p<0.05). Fluorescein uptake measured by anterior fluorometry showed a statistically signilicant difference before (35.7 ±25.5ng/ml) and 3 days (106.1 ±48.8ng/ml) after surgeiy (p<0.05) and before and 1 month ( 125.71 90.8ng/ml) after surgery (p<0.05). Conclusions. After modern small-incision cataract surgery, barrier function of coneal epithelium recovered in 3 months and it may be one of the factors which causes Iry sensation after surgery. None.
