Electrophysiological evaluation of visual field defect after vitrectomy

Abstract

We report a case of visual field defect after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in a 51-year-old male. A new temporal visual field defect occurred after reattachment of the retina, and focal sheathing of the nasal retinal arteries that was detected before the operation progressed after the surgery. The amplitudes of the positive wave in multifocal electroretinography (ERG) responses and of multifocal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in the temporal visual field were significantly decreased compared to the amplitudes of ERG and VEP responses in the fellow eye. These results suggest that damage to the inner retinal layer followed by temporary disturbance of retinal circulation can cause visual field defect after vitrectomy.
