Abstract

The surface gas adsorption effect on the magnetic properties of Pd fine particles was studied to elucidate the magnetic structure. The O2 gas exposure decreases the saturation component of magnetization to ∼ 8% of that of a particle with clean surface, but the high field susceptibility was slightly increased. This indicates that the ferromagnetism of the Pd fine particle is very sensitive to the surface condition and the ferromagnetic ordering exists in the surface region of the fine particle.
