Abstract

This paper describes drivers' characteristics when using visual information designed for a narrow road drive assist system. Two models of drivers' cognitive process when using the following two systems were constructed and analyzed: one system is designed to show a recommended route on the road and another system is designed to show it on the in-vehicle display. Based on the analyses, a new method which showed the information on the recommended timing and angles of steering control for driving along the recommended route, in addition to the recommended route shown on the in-vehicle display, was proposed and evaluated. The results imply that the proposed new method has an effect on realizing smooth passing along a narrow road and improving the drivers' performances.
