Graded index plastic optical fiber with ballpoint pen interconnection

Abstract

We developed a cost effective and precise ballpoint pen termination designed for graded index plastic optical fiber, which realized high coupling efficiency in the fiber connection despite the rough connection and the relatively small core diameter for plastic optical fiber. We call this connection with high coupling efficiency "ballpoint pen interconnection." We invented a thin, lightweight, and flexible 120 Gb/s optical cable with compact interface by using the ballpoint pen interconnection, and demonstrated 8K ultra high definition video data transmission.
