Abstract

A G-octree is proposed as an extension of the G-quadtree to three dimensions. A G-octree reflects in its construction a hierarchy of gray-scale-level homogeneity values, as well as a hierarchy of spatial resolution. Two-way G-quadtree/G-octree conversion procedures are developed, based on the algorithms for the binary case. These procedures provide an integrated processing environment for hierarchically represented 2-D/3-D gray-scale images. The approach is demonstrated by an application to the color coding of macro-autoradiography images of rat brains.
