Abstract
A new speech coding method, the modulo-PCM (MPCM) has recently been proposed to relace the the DPCM. The MPCM has no overload noise, although it has an inherent noise (called the anomaly error) and the granular noise as in the DPCM. The MPCM is excellent, therefore, in medium and high bit-rates transmissions. However, the MPCM has a similar grade of performance to the DPCM in a medium-bit transmission, since its anomaly errors cannot be avoided. This paper proposes a new MPCM which can reduce the anomaly error independently of the transmission bit-rate, and can expand the dynamic range of the coder input-signal approximately 1. 6 times that in a conventional method.
