Abstract

Calvatia nipponica, an invalid name of the Japanese giant puffball, is formally validated as a new species by providing a necessary Latin description and designating the holotype specimen. Morphological features of C. nipponica including peridium, capillitia, basidia, and basidiospores are described and illustrated.
