Abstract
An aqueous solution of d-α-tocopherol solubilized with sodium deoxycholate became colored on standing, probably due to air oxidation. 5- Formyl-7,8-dimethyltocol (1) and 7-formyl-5,8-dimethyltocol (2) were isolated from the solution and concluded to be responsible for the coloration. In oxidation of aqueous solutions of d-α-tocopherol, the time course of formation of products was followed by analytical HPLC. The main oxidation product was 1 in solutions solubilized with sodium deoxycholate and sodium cholate, whereas α-tocoquinone was the main product in those solubilized with 2,6-di-O-methyl-β-cyclodextrin.
