Abstract
A novel fabrication method of GI-POFs called 'the co-extrusion process' is proposed. As it is a continuous preparation process of GI-POFs, a manufacturing cost would be remarkably reduced. By controlling the diffusion temperature, diffusion time, and the molecular weight of PMMA, a PMMA based GI-POF is fabricated for the first time by the co-extrusion process. The refractive index profile of the GI-POF obtained by this process has been predicted to show a tailing part at the core-cladding boundary, which is the typical profile obtained by Fick's diffusion process. However, it is confirmed that the index profile of the GI-POF obtained by this process has no tailing part. It is exhibited that the GI-POF obtained by the co-extrusion process has a high bandwidth similar to the one prepared by the conventional interfacial-gel polymerization process.
