T1 - Protective role of HSP70 against various gastrointestinal diseases

N2 - It is well known that expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) is induced by various stressors in order to confer protection against such stressors. Stressor-induced tissue damage is involved in various diseases, especially gastrointestinal diseases. In this article, I review our recent work on protective role of HSP70 against gastrointestinal diseases. We obtained genetic evidences that HSP70 is protective against gastric ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease-related colitis and lesions of small intestine. We also suggested that HSP70 could stimulate the ulcer healing. Furthermore, we found that geranylgeranylacetone (non-toxic HSP-inducer) is effective against these diseases. Based on these observations, I propose that non-toxic HSP-inducers are therapeutically beneficial for these diseases.
