Protective role of HSP70 against various gastrointestinal diseases

Abstract

It is well known that expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) is induced by various stressors in order to confer protection against such stressors. Stressor-induced tissue damage is involved in various diseases, especially gastrointestinal diseases. In this article, I review our recent work on protective role of HSP70 against gastrointestinal diseases. We obtained genetic evidences that HSP70 is protective against gastric ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease-related colitis and lesions of small intestine. We also suggested that HSP70 could stimulate the ulcer healing. Furthermore, we found that geranylgeranylacetone (non-toxic HSP-inducer) is effective against these diseases. Based on these observations, I propose that non-toxic HSP-inducers are therapeutically beneficial for these diseases.
