Abstract

The decay kinetics of the 7.6 eV optical absorption band of hydroxy-free silica glasses during heating in oxygen gas flow was determined. It was found that annihilation of oxygen-deficient centers, ODC(I)s, agrees with the tarnishing reaction model. The absorption cross-section of that center, σ, was determined to be 7.8 ± 0.5 × 10-17 cm2. This value is close to 7.5 × 10-17 cm2 which was previously determined spectroscopically by hydrogen-gas treatment of oxygen-deficient silica glass.
