Abstract

The utilization of augmented haptics in the development of SmartTouch system is discussed. SmartTouch uses a tectile display and optical sensors. The sensor gathers information when it contacts an object and an electrical stimulation translates the information into a tactile sensation through the tactile display. Through SmartTouch, an individual not only makes physical contact with an object, but also touches the surface information of any modality. The potential applications of SmartTouch tactile display are also discussed.
