Structure and luminescent properties of CeO2: rare earth RE=Eu3+ and Sm3+ thin films

Abstract

Luminescent rare earth thin films were fabricated using CeO2 as a host crystal. The metal concentration was adjusted to 0.25 M, and a dopant concentration of Eu or Sm in CeO2 was fixed at 1.0 at. %. After stirring for 24 h, the resultant solutions were spin coated on quartz glass substrates. It was observed that Sm3+ doping was found to result in the unusually strong orange photoluminescence due to a dominent magnetic-dipole transition.
