Surface ferromagnetism of Pd fine particles

Abstract

Some evidence of the ferromagnetism of Pd fine particles prepared in a sufficiently clean condition with a vacuum pressure lower than 2× 10-9 Torr was reported. The surface magnetic properties were examined by adsorbing O2 atoms on the surface, showing that the ferromagnetic ordering of the Pd fine particle lies in the surface region and was very sensitive to the surface condition. Most significantly, the size dependence of the magnetization indicates that the ferromagnetism was likely to appear only on (100) facets of the particle.
