Abstract

The first total synthesis of rifamycin W (1) has been accomplished by coupling two segments of the aliphatic ansa-chain 40 and the aromatic chromophore 12. The totally enantiospecific sequence elucidates the configurations of the C28 position and the C12 - C29 double bond to be R and E, respectively.
