Abstract

Several surgical approaches are available in the treatment of acute superior mesenteric artery occlusion, and endovascular technique has recently been gaining in popularity. Open abdominal surgery is still performed, however, especially in critically ill patients, such as those with bowel necrosis, perforation, or abscess formation. With this type of procedure, the goal is to achieve revascularization by means of thrombectomy, usually approaching the superior mesenteric artery via the main trunk. Here, we report thrombectomy for acute superior mesenteric artery occlusion by means of a new route via the ileocolic branch. This method was simple, less invasive than other approaches, and associated with a good prognosis. The relevant literature is also discussed.
