Abstract

This paper presents two methods for analyzing the crustal deformation of the Japanese Islands. The first method is for the overall deformation that is caused by the plate movement. Taking the spectral decomposition to Green's function, this method finds a suitable slip distribution on the plate boundary within the accuracy of the measurement. The second method is for the regional deformation due to the heterogeneity of the islands. Regional stress is computed by applying the stress inversion method that solves a boundary value problem for self-equilibrating stress. The regional stress-strain relation is then predicted by comparing the stress with the measured strain. The applicability of these methods to the crustal deformation data is discussed.
