Abstract

A new computer graphics method is developed for generating highly realistic random textures to add natural roughness to a surface. By perturbing normal vectors of the surface by means of a recursion technique similar to the algorithms developed by Fournier, Fussell, and Carpenter to generate stochastic curves and surfaces, complicated random textures can be depicted with a small amount of data and without the requirement of an original texture pattern. Moreover, the properties of the texture can be changed simply by adjusting the few parameters that control them.
