Abstract
A novel differential detection (DD) scheme of 16 DAPSK based on MLSE using Viterbi algorithm is proposed and the BER performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by computer simulation. In the proposed Viterbi-decoding DD, each transmitted symbol sequence is estimated based on the trellis diagram one after another by using the metric of 3-symbol DD. Therefore the proposed Viterbi-decoding DD can estimate much longer symbol sequence than that of 3-symbol DD, whereas the computational complexity of the proposed scheme is the same as that of 3-symbol DD. It is shown that the BER performance of Viterbi-decoding DD outperforms that of 3-symbol DD without increasing computational complexity. Moreover, we show that the BER performance can be significantly improved by extending the length of trellis path.
