Abstract

A general condition is proposed for the shape of bluff bodies to shed vortices regularly in a three dimensional flow. Novel vortex generators which meet the condition in a pipe flow shed strong vortices regularly. A flow visualisation study of vortex shedding in a pipe flow also confirms the validity of the condition. (A)
