N2 - We proposed a polarized laser backlight to improve light use efficiency of liquid crystal displays, and evaluated the basic polarization properties of prototype of the backlight. The prototype backlight consisted of a laser, a polarizer, a diffusion sheet and two light guide plates of zero zero-birefringence polymer, which is free of orientational and photoelastic birefringence. The front output light from the backlight was highly polarized and the backlight maintained high degree of polarization.
