Several polycarboxylic acid polymers have been found to exhibit a broad range of biological activities. One of the most interesting activities is the activation of macrophage cells to become cytotoxic to tumor cells. However, it is not known whether the macrophage are activated by internalizing the polymers or if it is a surface interaction. J. Sunamoto and co-workers have successfully established a methodology for evaluating drugs at the cell membrane level. In this study the propensity of several polyanionic polymers of known structure, molecular weight and biological activity to induce the lysis of liposomes was investigated.
