Adaptability of AgSbTe2 to FGM

Thermoelectric properties of the unidirectionally grown p-type AgSbTe2 and Ag0.208Sb0.275Te0.517 boules have been evaluated to investigate adaptability of these materials system to functionally graded thermoelectric materials(FGMs). The AgSbTe2 boule contained even more Ag2Te precipitates than the Ag0.208Sb0.275Te0.517. Thermoelectric properties for these boules showed the different temperature dependence, which were strongly affected by the transformation at 418 K and also 633 K. The Ag2Te boule grown under similar condition as AgSbTe2 and Ag0.208Sb0.275Te0.517 is an n-type conductor. Thermoelectricmotive force E0 of the p-type AgSbTe2 boule is decreased by n-type Ag2Te precipitates. Pmax of Ag0.208Sb0.275Te0.517 boule were four times as large as that of AgSbTe2 at temperature difference ΔT=350 K, and also equaled that of the segmented Pb1-xSnxTe compound newly developed. High temperature phase of AgSbTe2 above 633 K revealed its high potential of power generation. It is concluded that there is possibility of developing more superior thermoelectric materials by controlling structure and composition.
