Addition and renovation of kankyu-tei: Design process to inherit the cultural background

The focus is on a bottom-up approach to inherit the local cultural background. While the contemporary society is in a structural transition from flow to stock, the utilization of stock is still insufficient, and in particular, attempts to inherit architecture for the next generation are not well discussed in the historical and cultural context. This paper describes the design process of the addition and renovation of “Kankyutei” (original design: Tsutomu Ikuta).
