Analysis and experimental measurement of the Q factor of hexagonal microcavities fabricated with crystal growth

    We investigated a whispering gallery mode cavity with a hexagonal cross-section using the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. We studied the dependence of Q on the curvature radius of the polygonal cavities and found two different modes; 'perturbed-WGM' and 'quasi-WGM', of which the former exhibits the higher Q. We also fabricated a cavity by employing laser heated pedestal growth and demonstrated a high Q.
