The characteristics of the single-defect cavity in 3D photonic crystal were investigated. Properties of the defect cavity such as tunability of the resonant frequency, mode separation and Q factor were analyzed. The plane-wave (PW) expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method were used to analyze the modes of defect cavity in the photonic crystal. Results showed that enough tunability of the resonant frequency, large mode separation (>60 meV) and high Q (>5000) could be obtained by introducing the rectangular-shaped defect at the asymmetric position in 3D structure.
