Two buildings were already constructed with the structural use of paper tubes. One used paper tubes for cantilever columns, and the other arch members. Two kinds of paper tubes, 250 mm in inner diameters, were used. Their outer diameters were 280 mm and 291 mm respectively. These paper tubes were manufactured by an ordinary process under proper conditions with the aim of obtaining high strength. In this paper, the mechanical properties of the paper tubes and the effect of the water content on them are discussed under compression and bending tests. Compressive strength of the paper tubes with a water content (in percent of a total weight) of 10% was 100 kgf/cm2. and their Young's modulus was 21 × 103 kgf/cm2. The ratio of bending strength to compressive strength was more than 1.43. Therefore the tensile strength is superior to the compressive strength from the theory of plasticity of an elastic, perfectly plastic solid. Compressive strength and Young's modulus decreased with an increase of water content. From 0% to 7% of water content (in percent of a total weight), the above decreasing ratios by the increases of water contents were small. From 7% to 13%, these were signifficantly large and over 13%, these decreased with the increases of water contents. It is probable that the strength and Young's modulus of the paper tubes under various water contents can be estimated by the use of the above ratios.
