The Japanese clouded salamander Hynobius nebulosus, endemic to Western Japan, is ranked as vulnerable in the Red List of Japan. However, microsatellite markers effective for estimating genetic diversity and structures for its conservation measures have never been reported. Therefore, we developed 19 novel microsatellite markers for H. nebulosus. The number of alleles and expected heterozygosity at each locus were 3-14 (mean = 6.63) and 0.22-0.82, respectively, in this species. The markers described here will be useful for investigating the genetic diversity and genetic structure, and planning conservation management of H. nebulosus.
