Chemical recycling of lactic acid based polymer using a solid acid

In order to establish the sustainable chemical recycling process of poly(L-lactic acid), degradation of a polymer blend of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polyethylene was studied. PLLA was selectively degraded into the corresponding lactate oligomers having a molecular weight of few hundreds in toluene by using environmentally benign solid acid, montmorillonite K5. The oligomer was repolymerized by the conventional chemical catalysts forming a high molecular weight PLLA. It was also confirmed that the repolymerized product showed the same Tm as that obtained by the polymerization of the authentic L-lactic acid.
