A bone fixation system which uses a bioabsorbable material has been developed for the craniomaxillofacial area and is at present commercially available. We organized a study team to confirm the utility of and identify any problems with this bone fixation system. The team comprised six facilities and a study population of 57 cases undergoing craniomaxillofacial surgical procedures. The operative technique with the absorbable plates is complex compared with previous metallic bone fixation systems. The fixation strength is adequate and relatively problem free. However, the plates need to be combined with other fixing methods in areas subjected to heavy loading. The following advantages were noted when compared with metallic fixation systems: The plates do not require subsequent extraction because they are designed to be absorbed; therefore, areas where extraction would be difficult or even impossible become good indications. Allergic reactions to metal are eliminated. Problems caused by corrosion and motion of the implant resulting from leaving it in place for a long time do not occur. The plates cannot be seen on X-rays. Some disadvantages were found compared with metallic fixation systems, but we believe that the advantage of being absorbed in the living body is paramount and out weighs any disadvantages. As always, correct selection according to patient" indication leads to a high level of usefulness. In our opinion, this application will develop even further in the future.
