We present the development of a bi-directional optical sub-assembly (BOSA) with 2×20 Gb/s data transmission capability that fits inside the connector of an active optical cable (AOC). The BOSA with adapted four-channel thin graded-index plastic optical fiber ribbon and multiple flip-chip attached optical semiconductor devices is constructed around our ultra-small optoelectric (OE) ferrule. The pitch between incoming and outgoing fibers is widened so as to still reach both laser diodes and photodiodes directly without the need for additional beam splitters. Applying the BOSA to an AOC is a promising approach for bi-directional high-definition video transmission in digital consumer electronics.
