In platooning, the inter-vehicle distance is so small that safety measures for the practical use of platooning should be considered in detail. In this paper, we propose a decision process for handling operations against assumed system failures in platooning with the aim of applying the process to our platooning system developed in the Development of Energy-saving ITS Technologies Project. The original large number of failure patterns was reduced to 6581 patterns by considering their equivalence, and then, the patterns were validated. The experimental results confirmed that our proposed process could handle various device failures in platooning and thereby could ensure safety.
