The design of a prototype Trusted Mail Agent (TMA) is discussed. This agent acts as an interface between two entities: a key distribution server (KDS) and a user agent (UA). The KDC manages keys for the encryption and authentication of text messages. The UA permits the user to interact with the message transport system (MTS) in order to post and take delivery of messages. The trusted mail agent itself is independent of any underlying message transport system. This generality permits a wide range of possibilities in implementing 'turnkey' trusted mail environments. After initially booting the TMA, all key handling operations proceed automatically without user intervention.
