Development and scale effects of small-size Swiss-roll combustors as heat sources

In the development of small combustors the biggest issue is flame quenching by heat loss due to increased surface-to-volume ratio. Swiss-roll type combustor has been studied as excellent configuration for small combustor, and their availability as heaters were also reported. However, its scale effects should be studied more. Scale effects on small Swiss-roll combustors as heat sources were investigated. Firstly, two kinds of scale-down combustors were fabricated to investigate the scale effect. A simple one-dimensional analysis was made including isothermal and hydrodynamic models of flame stabilization. It showed the importance of the temperature distribution of the combustor on the burning rate and the flame stabilization. Based on that model, three kinds of smaller combustors of coin-size (diameter 26 mm) were additionally fabricated and the characteristics of the flame stabilization were investigated. This study suggests some design parameters and also provides the possibility of realization of much smaller combustors.
