This study was designed to investigate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine in acute whiplash injury. The subjects were 506 patients with acute whiplash injury, with 497 asymptomatic volunteers as a control group. No difference in the occurrence of signs of disc degeneration or cord compression were observed between the whiplash injury and control groups. The correlation between the appearance of these signs and the subject's age was, however, significant. In addition, ligament injuries were found in only 0.8% of the patients. We conclude that the diagnostic value of MRI in acute whiplash injury is limited.
