N2 - Effect of hydrocarbon content in surrounding gas on diesel spray ignition and combustion was examined. In this study, a single-action rapid compression machine was used to observe the ignition and combustion of diesel spray and the soot formation and oxidation processes in the flame. Various surrounding gas compositions were obtained by adding different quantities of methane or propane to charged air with an equivalence ratio ranging from 0.0 to 0.6. The two color method was applied to analyze the flame temperature and KL values from the colored flame image taken by high-speed camera. Also characteristics of compression ignition of lean methane-air mixture were examined.
