Diffusion of nutrition in macroscopic tissue

This paper describes a method to estimate nutrition diffusion through a scaffold material for tissue engineering. The diffusion in the scaffold has been rarely measured in studies of constructing macroscopic tissues, and the relationship between diffusion rates and the capability of the scaffold remains unclear. We constructed a theoretical model of diffusion in macroscopic tissues integrated with scaffolds. This study focuses on "microstrand-shaped bacterial cellulose (BC microstrand)" that we previously reported (Fig.1)[1]. Our m ethod can be applied to other scaffold materials and provides us with a criterion for selection of scaffold material, the size and the culturing time of macroscopic tissues.
