Driver's characteristics and performances when using in-vehicle navigation system

This paper describes driver's characteristics and performances when using In-vehicle Information System (Navigation System) in experiments with simulator and real environment. In each experiment, the characteristics and performances were investigated comparing with the case when using paper map. In the experiment with simulator, the driving simulator which has a route selection and the performance to examine two dimensional (direction and acceleration) tracking task of driver was designed. Driver's characteristics were synthetically evaluated by dual-task method with auditory signals, control performances in tracking task, and eye movements. In the experiment with real environment, driver's behaviours were recorded by two small video cameras and driver's cognitive process and behaviour were investigated by heart rate variability, thinking aloud method, and eye movements. The results obtained from the both experiments imply that the navigation system decreases the workload of route selection in comparison with the paper map.
